HAVPCD250 – Norwich Cathedral Girls’ Choir

The Girls’ Choir was formed in September 1995 in response to the Archbishop’s Commission on Church Music (1992). This report urged cathedrals to give girls the same educational opportunities that boys have long had in the unique musical life of English Cathedrals. At Norwich there are 26 girl choristers. They rehearse twice a week and sing Evensong in the Quire every Tuesday night, alternately as a treble voice line and with the Cathedral lay-clerks and choral scholars. At major feasts, such as Easter and Christmas, both boy and girl choristers are present.

HAVPCD241 – O be joyful in the Lord 175 years of English church music

‘In quires and places where they sing, here followeth the anthem.’ This much-loved and oft-quoted phrase is found in the Book of Common Prayer amidst the rubric of the Offices for Morning and Evening Prayer, more often known as Matins and Evensong. It makes an apposite introduction to this disc of English church music, recorded to celebrate the 175th anniversary of St Luke’s Church, Chelsea.
