The Abbey Church of St Michael, Farnborough is an exceptionally fine example of neo-gothic architecture in the late French decorated style. Designed by Gabriel Destailleur (also architect of Baron Rothschild’s Waddesdon Manor) on the instructions of the Empress Eugénie, the building was completed in 1887 at a cost of some £300,000. In the imposing romanesque crypt are the tombs of Napoléon III, the Empress’s husband and last Emperor of France, their only son, the Prince Imperial Louis Napoléon, and finally that of the Empress herself. The crypt altar is dedicated to St Louis, Patron of France.
