The 18th century saw in England the waning of the French influence that had arrived in the 17th century at the Restoration, and a corresponding influx of things Germanic. It should come as no surprise, therefore, to discover that 18th-century London’s musical life is framed by the activities of two composers from the Austro-Germanic tradition, Handel and Haydn. Jacob Kirckman adds yet another dimension to the Germanic enrichment of English culture in the 18th century. He arrived in England in the early 1730s and worked for the harpsichord-maker Tabel. Having married Tabel’s widow and, in 1755, become a British citizen, Kirckman went on to dominate the field of English harpsichord-making.
