In his book On Music’s Borders (Unwin, 1927), R. R. Terry wrote: ‘Of all forms of church music, the one which seems to have wielded an influence out of all proportion to its intrinsic worth is the vernacular hymn.’ [Terry's] genuine interest in vernacular hymnody and congregational music…was to culminate in the creation of The Westminster Hymnal of 1912.

Worth Abbey has been a Benedictine monastery since 1933, first as a dependent priory of Downside Abbey. In 1957 Worth became an independent priory, and an abbey in 1965, although the links continue to be strong between the two houses, with several of the original community still living and working in the Monastery and School at Worth. The Abbey Choir was re-founded in 1992 when Michael Oakley was appointed Director of Music at Worth School.
