Carl Rütti writes: ‘It was Ian Moore who told me years ago that I should write a new 40-part motet to go with Tallis’s Spem in alium. I knew about Tallis’s 40-part motet but this work was just mentioned in the music history lectures to show the climax of vocal polyphony which one can’t sing any more. Nevertheless I heard Cambridge Voices perform this motet in Cambridge in 1994 and in Paris in 1996 and I wasn’t dreaming! These performances inspired me for my 40-part motet.’

Anne Page began her career as an organist in Perth, Western Australia, where she was born and educated. In 1979 she won a national music competition which enabled her to undertake advanced musical studies in Europe. In 1988 she made her début at the Royal Festival Hall in London playing 20th-century masterworks, and since then regularly gives recitals and broadcasts in Britain, Europe, the USA, and Australia. She is now based in Cambridge, where she is also much sought-after as a teacher.
