The Welsh choral tradition has been one of the most positive manifestations of Welsh musical culture for more than one and a half centuries. From humble beginnings in both rural and industrial communities, choral music in Wales has been sustained by a rich mix of amateur and professional involvement. This recording refers not only to this tradition, but to its more recent history. It includes music by Welsh composers in carefully-selected genres: hymn-tunes, arrangements of folk-tunes, part-songs, and anthems.

The formal début of the National Youth Choir of Wales was in Rhyl, at the 1985 National Eisteddfod. Since then the choir has held an annual summer course, preceded by workshops, and followed by a concert tour. Limited rehearsal time continues to demand a high level of choral skills and discipline from choristers who, ranging from 16 to 21 years of age and drawn from all parts of Wales, are auditioned and re-auditioned annually. The list of those who have gained national and international repute as soloists is impressive, and includes the choir’s president, Bryn Terfel, who was a founder member.
