St. Chad’s Cathedral was the first Catholic cathedral to be built in this country after the Reformation. It was designed by the architect Augutus Welby Pegin, and completed in 1841. A soaring interior is complemented by some outstanding 19th century windows, and older furnishings brought from Europe by Pugin. The cathedral was raised to the status of Minor Basilica to mark the centenary, and underwent extensive restoration at its 150th anniversary.
