The sequence of music on this recording represents sacred choral compositions across Western Europe spanning the past thousand years. It celebrates the development and rich diversity of musical style and language over the centuries. No attempt has been made to cover every corner of a vast repertoire – an impossible task in an hour of music. However, each century is covered by at least one composition, with geographical as well as stylistic variety. Perhaps this collection also speaks of a widening vision of musical repertoire in our English cathedrals.

The Choir of Guildford Cathedral was formed in 1961 under Barry Rose, the Cathedral’s first Organist and Choirmaster. Since the consecration of the Cathedral, the choir has maintained a daily sung Evensong and has built up an enviable reputation for its singing. The 18 boys of the choir are drawn from Lanesborough Preparatory School in Guildford, and some of the older ones attend the Royal Grammar School. The lower parts are sung by professional lay-clerks, and choral scholars from the University of Surrey. During its relatively short history, the choir has made numerous recordings, including an album of Christmas Carols which won a ‘Gold Disc’ award for the sale of 500,000 records and, more recently, a ‘Platinum Disc’ for over a million records sold. As well as touring widely in Britain, Europe, and North America, the choir also broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and has made several television appearances.
