‘In quires and places where they sing, here followeth the anthem.’ This much-loved and oft-quoted phrase is found in the Book of Common Prayer amidst the rubric of the Offices for Morning and Evening Prayer, more often known as Matins and Evensong. It makes an apposite introduction to this disc of English church music, recorded to celebrate the 175th anniversary of St Luke’s Church, Chelsea.

The Choir of St Luke’s Church, Chelsea is made up entirely of dedicated amateur singers, who devote a significant amount of their week to enhancing the church’s worship, with a repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the present day. In addition the choir undertakes at least two cathedral visits a year to sing choral services (most recently to Worcester, Winchester, Derby and Westminster Abbey), and gives regular concerts.
