The Girls’ Choir was formed in September 1995 in response to the Archbishop’s Commission on Church Music (1992). This report urged cathedrals to give girls the same educational opportunities that boys have long had in the unique musical life of English Cathedrals. At Norwich there are 26 girl choristers. They rehearse twice a week and sing Evensong in the Quire every Tuesday night, alternately as a treble voice line and with the Cathedral lay-clerks and choral scholars. At major feasts, such as Easter and Christmas, both boy and girl choristers are present.

The music on this disc reflects the wide-ranging repertoire of the Girls’ Choir, as sung throughout the liturgical year in Norwich Cathedral. It was recorded by John Whitehouse of Merlin Records, whose tragic death early in 2000 was an enormous loss to music in Norfolk. This CD is dedicated to his memory.
