Vierne’s output is mainly for the organ, and includes the 6 Symphonies, the 24 pièces en style libre, and the 24 pièces de fantaisie. Apart from Les angélus on this recording, he wrote other music for voice, for piano, for chamber music combinations, for orchestra and chorus, and sacred choral music such as the Messe solennelle. Langlais was an extremely prolific composer and his works include pieces for many different combinations of instruments and voices, although organ works predominate. He lamented the demise of the role of the organ, Gregorian chant, and singing in Latin in Paris churches, which left the musical content of the services to the discretion of the clergy.

The Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland’s premier cathedral choir, has been described by The Sunday Times as ‘one of the UK’s finest cathedral choirs’. It is unique in Scotland, maintaining as it does a choral tradition in which services are sung nearly every day during school term-time as well as at major liturgical feasts.
