The music on this disc is a snapshot of music in the life of a great Abbey church. At the heart of this is the Latin plainchant. Arising in the earliest days of the Christian Church from the music of the synagogue and temple, this is the music upon which the prayer of the monks is founded, and the music on the disc therefore spans from the chant through renaissance polyphony to the present. It includes music written by monks of Douai, both past and present, and a mass commissioned to mark the Millennium.

The recording has two sequences, one based around the Missa Quarta by Lajos Bárdos (1899-1986) and the other around the Douai Missa Brevis, commissioned from Roxanna Panufnik (b.1968) by the Douai Singers in 2000. The first sequence, allied to the music of the Mass, is of music from Advent to Epiphany; the second is based around the Feast of Pentecost.
