Leonard Bernstein was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, as composer, conductor, pianist, writer and communicator. From the time of his debuts in the 1940s as composer and conductor, he remained at the forefront of international musical life, and since his death in 1990 his compositions have maintained his importance. Bernstein was the heir of Gershwin in that he successfully bridged the gap between popular and serious idioms in a kind of ‘crossover’ music that needed to make no quality concessions. As his music becomes more widely known so his range of expression becomes better understood, and his achievement as a creative artist can be confirmed both for its significance and its lasting value.
