Youth choirs are permanently in flux. Voices change, singers mature and eventually move on, while some years inevitably include stronger talent than others. Farnham Youth Choirs Class of 98 was special in many ways and produced performances to prove it.
Two major competitions were won: an international event in Italy and the televised Sainsburys Youth Choir of the Year in the Buxton Opera House. There was a much-acclaimed appearance at the Festival of Remembrance in November and, not least, the first performance of a new arrangement of Saint-Sa & euml;ns Carnival of the Animals.
This recording not only captures the music behind these successes, but also the stylistic thread that has made the sound of Farnham Youth Choir so distinctive. Farnham Youth Choir was founded in 1984 by its current director, David Victor-Smith. It aims to provide children aged from 10 to 16 with the opportunity of singing to a very high standard.
Typically, each child spends four years in the choir, and auditions are held annually for children from a wide area round Farnham. The choirs repertoire is broadly based to give a musical education that supports and extends the childrens individual musicianship. Many concerts have been given on tour round England and Scotland, and there are frequent performances in the Surrey area.
