A Windy Christmas
Roderick Elms
Release Date: November 2019
The idea for this album came from an ever-increasing library of arrangements and compositions written in celebration of the festive season and all involving the use of wind in one way or another — brass quintet, wind quintet, trumpet, organ, oboe and, of course, the human voice. A few tracks have been specially arranged for the present forces, whilst others were specifically written to be played by wind instruments.
Calypso Carol was a commission from Hutton and Shenfield Choral Society with the brief for a flexible arrangement for SATB chorus together with modest orchestral forces which would include a part for children’s chorus. This part also allows the children to indulge in a little vocal percussion to enhance the ‘latin’ feel of the arrangement. In this recording, the children’s part is incorporated within the SATB choir. A Windy Christmas was written as a concert piece for wind quintet and incorporates many favourite Christmas carols including the beautiful Quelle est cette odeur agréable played by a cor anglais. A Windy Christmas was subsequently arranged for brass quintet.
