Leonard Bernstein was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, as composer, conductor, pianist, writer and communicator. From the time of his debuts in the 1940s as composer and conductor, he remained at the forefront of international musical life, and since his death in 1990 his compositions have maintained his importance.
Bernstein was the heir of Gershwin in that he successfully bridged the gap between popular and serious idioms in a kind of crossover music that needed to make no quality concessions. As his music becomes more widely known so his range of expression becomes better understood, and his achievement as a creative artist can be confirmed both for its significance and its lasting value.
The Chichester Singers are an established part of musical life in Chichester and West Sussex. They have 140 members and work with professional musicians to produce music to a very high standard, under the musical direction of Jonathan Willcocks.
Most of their concerts are held in Chichester Cathedral, but they have also performed in many other major venues in the South of England.
