As Joseph was a-walking He heard an angel sing, This night shall be born Our heavenly King. This evocative refrain from the anonymous Sloane Manuscript, to music by Richard Terry, sets the tone of this compilation of carols and songs for Christmas.
Alongside upper-voice arrangements of the familiar carols, including Away in a manger, Ding, dong merrily on high, and Once in royal David’s city, the Girl Choristers of Wells Cathedral also sing many Christmas songs with piano or organ accompaniment.
All are set to music by British composers.Wells Cathedral Choir consists of eighteen boy and twenty girl choristers (two separate choirs), and twelve men. The choristers, educated at Wells Cathedral School, are aged from 8 to 14.
The history of the choir is at least as old as the building itself: the records of the Vicars Choral go back to 1136 and it is known that there were boys singing at Wells even earlier than that. In 1994 the music foundation was enriched by the introduction of girl choristers.
