By combining parts of Bachs Clavier & uuml;bung (Keyboard practice) Book 3 with Schuberts Mass in G, important music for church use is made available to the listener in a form that arguably serves well the composers original intentions. The presentation of Bachs organ solos, which break up the sections of the Schubert mass, has the effect of concentrating attention on the individual choral movements.
Sheffield Cathedral Choir takes part in important City occasions and serves the Anglican tradition in regular services to both the Book of Common Prayer and Alternative Service Book texts throughout the Churchs year.
The Gentlemen of the Choir (Songmen) come from several walks of life, including industry, the professions, and the academic world. As there is no choir school at the Cathedral, the choristers are selected from several of the Citys schools, and represent families devoted to the regular worship of the Cathedral.
