The Choir of Manchester Cathedral is comprised of sixteen trebles and nine lay clerks. The trebles attend the internationally renowned Chethams School of Music, situated next to the Cathedral. In addition to the round of daily services in the Cathedral, the Choir reaches a wider audience through concert, radio, and television appearances.
Naji Hakims Mass was commissioned by the Dean and Canons of Manchester Cathedral for the Year 2000. It follows the French tradition of 19th- and 20th-century messes solennelles represented by composers such as Widor, Vierne, or Langlais, especially with regard to the antiphonal and soloistic character of the grande-orgue.
The general atmosphere of this Mass is of a festive and joyful thanksgiving.
