A chronological programme of arrangements and original pieces for trumpet, beginning with military signals from the Middle Ages and ending with John Gardners Sonata da Chiesa of 1976, and using several different trumpets.
The trumpet calls [tracks 1 and 5] are played on straight post horns in C, and the Krakow Fanfare  and Monteverdi Toccata  on natural trumpets in C. the Thomsen Toccata  uses Venitian coronation trumpets, and the second movement of the Gervaise dances  is played on flugel horns.
All the other works are played on various modern instruments.Mark David was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1992. He has worked extensively with the London Sinfonietta and English Brass Ensemble and can be heard on numerous film and television scores.
Alistair Mackie is now Co-Principal Trumpet in the Philharmonia Orchestra. In 1990 he became the first brass player to win the wind category of the Royal Overseas Music Competition and following this gave recitals throughout the UK.
Andrew Millington has developed a varied career as an organist, conductor, and teacher. After 16 years as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Guildford Cathedral he left in September 1999 to be Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral.
